January 10th, 2010 - While it has only been two weeks since I started this journey I have already learned so much. These are things no one tells you, but everyone knows. They wait for you to learn them yourself. You know what I mean. Like when you are a kid everyone tells you don't touch the stove you will get burnt, but no one tells you, don't stick your tongue on an ice cube it will get stuck. That is something you just have to learn on your own. So for what it is worth this is what I have learned.
1. To really look good while on the treadmill you should put your hair in a ponytail or wear a sweat band. The pony swings from side to side, making you look oh so cute, while a headband stops the sweat from rolling down your face. When that happens you make feeble attempts to wipe the sweat, while losing your balance. I have begun to grow my hair, and I am considering wearing a bathing cap.
2. Always double knot your shoe laces when using any of the machines. Oh and by the way, wearing Keds is considered sooo not cool. I think the shoelace thing speaks for itself, unless you want to be kissing metal when your lace gets stuck.
3. Before starting your exercise for the day, a good tip is to use the bathroom first. Nothing breaks the momentum more than having to stop and go. Not to mention your machine may be in use when you return.
4. Never pick a machine that is close to someone who is sweating heavily, even if it is the only machine available, unless you want to be showered in sweat each time the person moves. Which brings me to another important lesson.
5. Always wipe the machine before you start and when you finish. It is important you wipe before you start as I have seen many a person sweat and walk away leaving the machine dripping.
6. Always, always have a bottle of water. It is so important that you remain hydrated while working out. It is also a good idea to do what I do. Open the bottle, pop in two motrin, let them desolve and drink merrily. That way you will already have pain relief as you go.
7. And always remember to Breath... in with the good air out with the bad. This breathing thing is remarkable...it will keep you from passing out.
So that's what I learned. I thought someone would have told me these things, but then if they did, they wouldn't get the chance to snicker at me, as I run to the showers to get the sweat off me.
