Giving my lungs a workout

January 22nd, 2010 - Exercising your lungs is crucial to being in shape, so what I like to do, to make sure I take care of my lungs is...Sing. I truely love to sing, not just the sing in the shower kind of love to sing (I almost drowned once when I was singing in the shower. Not a good idea to open your mouth wide to sing, while facing the faucet and water is spraying in your mouth), or a riding in my car kind of love to sing (once when I had the windows all open and was singing a perfect melody, the driver in the next car asked if he should call for help, I snickered when he bumped into the car ahead of him. The ying and the yang at work) No, I am a sing anywhre you want, kind of love to sing, no matter who is around, kind of love to sing, and no matter how bad I sound kind, of love to sing. Singing is almost like breathing to me, I sing therefore I am. And because it gives me a mood boost I do it often and loud.

I only have one slight problem with my singing .. I never know all the words. Heck, sometimes I don't know any of the words, I make up my own as I go, but it doesn't stop me from singing. If only I had that same fearlessness when I face the machines in the gym. The people around me like my singing so much they will even print the words for me and leave them annonomously on my desk chair. I can be heard in the aisles at work, at the grocery store, in line at the post office, in a doctors office and once while in church. The church would have been fine but folks were singing 'Ave Maria' and I was singing 'The Bears Fight Song'. My family is used to me singing and just roll their eyes, can't say they like my singing, but they are used to it. I quickly explain that singing is good for me because it gives my lungs a workout, to which they say, well then can you sing Solo, So low I can't hear you....very funny.

Funny how a little thing like singing can bring out the best in someone (me) and the worst in someone (most people who hear me). But as I have learned with creating this new me, whatever goal or task you set out to achieve, it has got to be done for you. Because you can't do it for others, you won't suceed. So just as I am continuing to exercise for me, and continuing to eat healthier for me (and my fear of the food natzi). I will continue to sing for me. For all those who can't understand the joy in singing, grab your headphones and crank up some music, and then exercise your lungs. You will feel great even if you don't know the words.

  1. Nothing wrong with singing! My friends laugh at me all the time on how I can break out into song at any given moment. If a word makes me think of a song....watch out!

Great job with keeping up with the workouts!
