July 24th, 2010 - Is it me, or are names today becoming, well, you know, really out there. I mean when did objects start becoming peoples names. Really, who names their kid 'Apple'. Did they just wake up in the morning, see an apple on the table, and say, "Hey, what a great name, let's name our baby Apple". What if it had been an apple core or what if it had been a prune that they saw. And how is this kid going to feel when she grows up and enters adulthood, hell what is jr. high going to be like.
Nowadays when I ask someone for their child's name I have to hold my tongue because more often then not I am saying to mself, what in the hell were you thinking. Talcum, you really named your kid Talcum. On purpose, Talcum! When I think of Talcum I think of powder, not some little girl. Were you still under anethestic when your named her. How about 'Bo'. That's it nothing more just 'Bo'. And another favorite is Hauk. Or how about the kid's whose last name was Parks and they named their boys Lincoln and Grant. Then there is Richard Richard's or Dick Dick's, for short. Really, do you want your child to go through life with that moniker. One little guy I know has a name of Snake and the sister is Sunshine. Seems the parents were into nature and that is what they came up with. They wanted to make sure they had unique names, I can assure them, no one else will have those named. For sure! I just don't get it. What ever happened to Daniel or Thomas or Susan even Kathleen. No those are not names you will hear in this decade. Lately I am hearing combo names, you know they take two names and blend them together. And then when they tell you the name they look at you like...haven't you ever heard it. Smithson is the latest, taken from two last names Smith and Johnson, maybe not so bad if it was a hypenated last name, but no that is the first name. I met one little girl name Pretty, all I can say is I hope for her sake she is.
I always thought a name was supposed to be something strong, honerable, something to be proud of, I mean you keep it your whole life. Should you do something extraordinary in your lifetime, you will be forever remembered by your name, which brings to mind the poor child whose name is 'Blanket', really Michael, was that the best you could do.
